I came across Peter Gray’s ideas several years ago, but haven’t gotten around to reading his book, Free to Learn, yet. Gray’s book is on my list. In the meantime, I listened to a podcast with Peter Gray and Zach Rhoads on The Social Exchange Podcast.
Gray had some difficulty trying to get his son to learn in school. He was very skeptical about alternative education until he looked into the benefits. He now believes that the best education is one that is directed by the child and fostered by an adult when needed. He ended up researching alternative models of education and came to the conclusion that children need much more free time to learn in their own way.
I liked this interview with Gray because Rhoads let him explain his ideas without interjecting. Take a listen below.
Good interview: Children need unstructured time. This give them the opportunity to use their imagination unimpeded.
